Personally ... I think you just have to try it until you find a way that works. I wouldn't dry it in place with a heat gun though, you might cause other glue joints to creep. I had a section on the deck of my Outer Island that I couldn't get my strips to bend and twist without fracturing. I tried a half dozen methods and none of 'em worked ... I just kept bustin' strips and wastin' time. The problem was my wood ... not the method. I finaly got the strips to bend/twist by thinning them locally and using a heat gun. I think you just have to experiment a little and see what works in each instance.
