I have delt with the fitting problem of this first strip at the back of the coaming by using a thicker strip that is slightly proud of the recess both inside and out. A little planing and sanding is all that is needed to achieve that transitional slope and peak found on the Guillemot. You could also just glue two strips together to double the thickness and plane off the bead and cove. The next strip plane a beveled edge to match and from there on out use the bead and cove.
When I glue these strips in place, as well as the coaming risers, I use a combination of wood glue and hot melt glue. The wood glue for strength and the hot melt to act as a clamp, which greatly speeds up the process. I put just a dab of hot melt in the center of the bonding area and wood glue on the outer edges of each strip (the long edges just use wood glue), then hold in place for 20-30 seconds and on to the next strip. For me, I have found that doing it this way is faster than using the C/A glue and accelerator spray. The reason being is that the hot melt glue gives you a couple of seconds for wiggle room adjustments, while the C/A does not. I then find myself breaking lose a number of the C/A glued strips and reglueing the strips wasting time and creating frustration.
