: Hello all, I am in the process of epoxying the fiberglass cloth and both the
: deck and hull are covered. I am on my second coat on the hull and there is
: still a cloth texture that shows through. Should I keep applying epoxy and
: sanding between coats or does the varnish act as a fill. I really want a
: smooth surface, and I think it has to be acheived(sp?) with expoy as
: varnish will eventually wear off. Thanks for the input.
I needed to apply 3 epoxy fill coats to be able to get a smooth surface without sanding down to the fiberglass. I let the epoxy cure for 6 weeks before sanding and varnishing. When I was done varnisishing the finish was very smooth. Over the next couple months I started to notice the texture of fiberglass webbing was starting to come back. I think that the epoxy kept curing and shrinking. If you want the smoothest possible finish you might want to let the epoxy cure for a couple months. The varnish will not hide any flaws from your sanding, so take your time. Good luck.
