In Response To: Epoxy: compatibility of different epoxies (Mark de Araujo)

Can I use different brands of epoxy on
: different parts of the same boat?

Mark,

Certainly, if the epoxies are used on "different parts" there is no problem... The only real problem may be the chemical reactions which could occur between the two kinds of epoxy. This would happen when you bond "two parts" to each other with one of the epoxies.

Here are a few suggestions: Call RAKA and discuss the problem. Their service is legendary. They may *know* that their epoxy is compatable or not.

You may be able to make the epoxy compatable by letting the first brand really cure, 2 weeks or more, and then sanding to open the chemical bonds on the epoxy molecule itself before joining it with the second brand. It would also be a very good idea to do this on a test piece before applying it to your boat.

Best wishes. And please let us know what you find out... If this is a known compatibility, we should add the knowledge to KayakWiki for those that follow.

Rick
