Epoxy: Light colored pigments...

are frustrating. Glassed the hull on my Cirrus model. Second coat was fairly heavily tinted yellow (Shawn Baker style). I'm using a paste pigment, about the size of a small marble for 3 oz. batches of Raka resin with the 350 hardner. I was hoping to do this on the real boat, although probably just the bottom panels, to match the paint color to hide scratches, if/when it does get painted. Although this pigment works great to make yellow epoxy, it's goes on so thin, that even after four coats, I still see the wood tones (not nearly as yellow as the drips on the floor) and it looks like it will take three or four more coats to be completely colored. That's 7 or 8 coats total, ok for the model, way too much weight/cost for the full-size.

Something similar happened in the cockpit of my Chesapeake that was glassed and coated with black tinted epoxy (two fill coats and it was black as night), but then I thought that it may get uncomfortably hot inside, so I attempted to change it to white. Bad decision. It took at least 5 coats to go from black to semi-white. This must have added pounds to my boat. Similarly if I was to try to coat the hull with yellow epoxy, it could take up to 6 or 7 coats.

Is it the fact that I'm using Raka epoxy and lots of it is dripping onto the floor? Should I add silica or wood flour to thicken it slightly? Any suggestions? Anyone else out there try light colored pigments?
