: Now nearing completion of my Tern 14, I planed to install bulkheads and not
: the Pygmy hatches. After drilling the holes for the foot braces I found
: the forward bulkhead had to be placed farther forward than I thought. Very
: hard to reach from the cockpit and I wanted a strong seal. In the interest
: of strength I had to install a 4" deck plate forward of the bulkhead
: and filet and tape from there. It is too late for this boat but I was
: wondering if anyone had a method for the bulkhead the didn't require
: cutting a hole in the deck. It is really not a bad thing as it does give
: me access to storage, just bruised my ego a bit.. Thanks
We did our Tern that way--bulkheads, no hatches. Installed inspection plates in the bulkheads before installing the bulkheads themselves, then worked through the holes to attach the bulkheads--with epoxy followed by silicone sealant for the rear bukhead, sealant alone for the front bulkhead, no epoxy--because of the reach issue you mentioned. However, we could have epoxied the front bulkhead by standing the boat on its nose, masking, and applying thickened epoxy via a syringe or plastic bag. I wish I had done this, because the silicone wasn't enough and now needs to be redone, since the front bulkhead leaks. What price a smooth deck? Maybe I'll pull it all out and try the epoxy after all. Anyone know how to remove silicone?
