Hundreds of thousands of commercial carpenters can't be wrong.

They last forever, and the worm drive puts the motor over the workpiece, so it rotates less in your hands. You can also find them rebuilt for about $100-120.

They really put up to a lot of abuse, and rebuilding generally only consists of new seals and fresh oil in the reservoir.
