Skin-on-Frame: Wood sources in Portland, OR

Hey, I'm getting ready to start building a baidarka, and I'm wondering about reasonably-priced wood sources. I've found sources for relatively cheap douglas fir and red cedar, but I'm concerned about the strength of the cedar (especially for the gunwales). Since I'm working without power tools, I need workable wood, and my paddle-carving experiments suggest that carving fir with a crooked knife will only lead to sore hands and heavy drinking. Anybody know of sources of any sort of spruce around here for a reasonable price? Or am I too worried about the damage resistance of cedar? I've considered using fir for the gunwales and cedar for the rest of the structure, but I don't want my boat to explode the first time I knock into a rock.
