Hi Pete

I'll be making the loom pretty much as big round as I can because of my hand size and I agree I can always cut it and the length down later. I'm just thinking that it may end up being way too heavy.

When I'm done tomorrow I'll post the final weight.

btw, thanks for the mails on the kayak. You've convinced me :)

: Yo Pete

: I think that with all greenland paddles there is a personal element. Whether
: it be using traditional heights/spans/knuckles etc or inches, you can make
: it the way you want. A rule of thumb that comes through the bulletin board
: consistently is that if in doubt make your paddle bigger (except the loom
: smaller) at first as you have the option of whittling things back to suit.

: My first greenland paddle version worked out at 88" over all length and
: 16 or 18" loom. I think I have a slightly thicker loom than most
: other people. Those measurements are longer than some and shorter than
: others. But at the end of the day the paddle seems to work just fine for
: me and I am duplicating the measurements for my second paddle. Only
: because I was not feeling adventurous.

: However, I have to make a storm paddle at some time because I live in a
: really windy place and it seems appropriate. Not of course that I intend
: to use the storm paddle in earnest - rembering that a good seaperson does
: not put to sea in adverse conditions....

: That site I was promising about the guillemot s&G construction is:

: I will email you directly some of the photos of my kayak (that are repeated
: on Myrl Tantons fabulous site) because I seem to have lost the address
: somewhere in computer transitions.

: Cheers Pete
