Epoxy: Silly Me

I have a 'spare' Greenland paddle which I had built from Pine/Cedar. I need a take-apart paddle for use as a spare so I thought...

"If I cut the paddle in two, wrap some cloth/epoxy around the loam (producing a sort of tube around one foot long), disassemble everything, glue the tube to one side and use one of those pop-up buttons on the other side... it's got to work !!"

Well I cut the paddle, sealed everything with tape, clamped the pieces up and wrapped them.

Trouble is, I cannot separate the two pieces !! I know the epoxy has not stuck to either side but... nothing will budge !!

Has anybody any ideas how to separate these ?? Would heating the tube work, or would it just distort it ?

Thanks very much in advance.
