Hi Patsy,

I believe you can buy "water-proof" binoculars. A small pair of these might fit nicely in your PFD pocket. Actually last year I was crossing a stretch of quite rough water & had forgot my $20 pair of compact binoculars in my PFD pocket. After repeated soakings during the 1 1/2 hour crossing the binoculars did not take in any salt water internally and were completely OK afterwards. These were not the more expensive water-resistant variety, but just some cheap binoculars from Canadian Tire or WalMart.
