: I'm looking for a compass for the next boat, and wondering what you all think
: of the various models out there. I've also noticed a distinct tendency to
: mount the thing either pretty far away, where a turning bezel couldn't be
: turned;

You don't really need a compass with a turning bezel. Write your heading on your chart when you prep the chart before you leave home.

: or to mount it rather close, where maybe the line of sight might
: be too short for best navigating.

Exactly...you also have to refocus your eyes to look down if it's too close. Some might get seasick.

: Any comments from you ace seafarers on
: what's what with compasses--choice of model, and mounting of same? I've
: never used one in a yak, but used them in racing dinghys for several
: years.

Buy one you like the looks of; one you can see well, one with good contrast.
