Hi Jim,

What I'm going to say may sound like sacrilege to hard core wooden boat aficionados, but will fall right in line with the thoughts of die-hard paddlers and safety-conscious types.

First, I've fallen in love with SS U-bolts in the bow and stern, embedded in your epoxy end pour. You can hang your boat by the U-bolt, use it to attach carrying toggles, it's a secure point for attaching bow and stern lines for transport, and even an easy spot to lock a padlock to.

Then, make sure you have adequate perimeter lines. You're right on track with heavy cord. Bolted padeyes or good recessed fittings would both be bomber. Glued on fittings probably aren't enough. They don't need to run to the extreme bow or stern, but within a foot or two. They also don't necessarily need them to run along the cockpit because you're going to grab the cockpit rim instead of them. They could stop at the farthest back foredeck bungie and start at the paddlefloat rigging bungie. Foredeck perimeter line needs to be burly for rescuing other paddlers reaching over their boat and grabbing for something on yours. Rear deck perimeter lines might not need to be as strong, but strong enough to grab instead of slick varnish.

As far as bungie goes...Put a bungie across the centerline about 3' behind the bow and 3' in front of the stern for spare paddle mounts. A pair of bungies along the sheers behind the cockpit for a paddlefloat outrigger park isn't a bad idea. (Also practice/learn to do this rescue without the aid of deck rigging).

3 or 4 bungies perpendicular to the boat's centerline on your foredeck. Don't do diagonal bungies. They might look good, but they're worthless. Parallel bungies about 4-5" apart. A deck cleat mounted along the centerline of the deck will give you a nice paddle park.

Don't forget to consider some internal rigging. You can run some bungies or a plastic clip, or a block of minicell inside the deck forepeak to hang a knee tube or your bilge pump. Do remember to consider the entrapment hazard and don't install anything that could grab your foot or bootie.

Have fun!

Shawn

: Shawn: I'm rigging out my Arctic Tern, and I'm interested in the lessons you
: can share on deck rigging. What is the standard for deck lines among the
: instructors with whom you worked? Lots of bolted padeyes, heavy cord, deck
: lines around the entire perimeter of the boat? I start drilling this
: weekend, and would appreciate your advice.
