Whenever I paddle with anyone, the first thing that happens is that everyone has their boat on the beach with their hatches off and are loading in all the safety stuff, extra dry clothes, food etc. That's for an afternoon paddle not an over-nighter.

Forget those myths about stiff bulkheads - it doesn't exist. And bulkheads don't "blow" out. The only reason to not put in a bulkhead is that you don't want to bother doing it.
