I have found (and this depends somewhat on the longitudinal profile of your deck)
that it helps to have at least some strips run from the front deck, through the cockpit opening, and into the rear deck. Ending strips at the cockpit opening can potentially create a "hard spot" in the curve of the deck. There is a principle of wood bending that says the closer you get to the end of a strip, the less you can bend it, until at the very end it is impossible to bend it at all.
