i used heat shrink fabric (prob a polyester) for four 1/4 scale models when i was just beginning thinking about my own boats. here's one below:
the fabric is truly wonderful stuff as it looks scale and will shrink and shrink and shrink - and is easy to use - (covering the model below probably took 1/2 hr or less).
