As one who is considering magnetic hatches in a future project, I would truly be interested to see if you have any investigation on the compass interference of magnets in the hatches. Sounds to me like John and Rob have firsthand experience saying otherwise. Also, check out Ted Henry's building pages http://www.metakrome.com/kayak/magnet.html. Ted's experience is pretty much the same as Rob's -- that above 16" or so there is no effect.
