Agree with Mike, you definately don't want to sand varnish that's not cured completely, takes a month or so in direct sunlight, or more time out of it to get a complete cure.

Not sure I'd want to try color sanding, the process of polishing paint (varnish really is unpigmented paint) with a smooth varnished surface. Could be done but you end up going thru all stages of sand paper up to 2000 or 2500 grit, then polishing. Not for the faint of heart :)
