I built a great auk last winter. I only took it out a few times. The first time I had the same problem as you. I was paddling upstream with a heavy wind. When I took it to a lake it was a lot different. Sounds like the conditions might have been it. Also; every kayak handles differently you know. You might have to learn the subtleies. My friend who was new to kayaks had a hell of a time trying to keep it straight. So we just towed him around with the catamaran.
