: I am interested in making a sprint K1 within the next year. Is fiberglass
: necessary to make a strong boat (and I don't mean strong against
: impacts/abrasion). Can a boat be made with just epoxy seal coats or
: varnish, and the only fiberglass be seam reinforcement and still be
: strong? Any experiences? ..thanks

eric,

"... the only fiberglass being seam reinforcement…" Suggests you are thinking plywood. If so, the answer is yes. If you have some other construction in mind, the answer might be different.

There are lots of wood boats - sprint kayaks and rowing shells - made and used without fiberglass.
