Folding Boats: My Experience

: Your Klepper looks great. If you want to carry lots of gear, and want super
: durability and stability, they are ideal.

The tandem though, did get old for me, but my wife still likes it. We can stick it in the back of the station wagon, a pair of friends in the back seat, our two singles on top, and have a nice adventure. It is heavy. One thing that I find I don't like is having to the canvas deck dried after usage.

: Plus, I'm retired and plan to stay that way. ha! My wife just retired this week I'll watch closely to see what happens. She got special permission to access the office today so that she could straighten out some of her spreadsheets.

: However, folders have not, with rare exception, been designed
: with homebuilding ease and/or performance in mind.

Yes, once I developed some skill the Klepper just quit working for me.

: The folding kayaks in the builders manual use the same aluminum tubing and
: HDPE plastic as the Feathercrafts, but with no stretcher bars and sponsons,

Yes, and one of my first thoughts was how tightly is the "skin" over your frame.

: little less with practice. It may take a bit longer to assemble than your
: average Klepper, but the $3500.00 cost saving, is some consulation. ha!

My Klepper is heavy to hoist on to a car, with a lighter folder leaving it together generally would be preferable.

: For airline or automobile trunk
: transport a hard case ( golf or snowboard case) is recommended.

This case, loaded with the boat, is under the common fifty pound limit on many airlines, correct?

: To build these boats, you must be willing to try new materials and building
: methods, and that has been the biggest stumbling block for many would be
: folder kayak builders.

Actually building a S&G (I'm now starting my third within six months) required new material and methods.
