One of my wifes christmas presents this year are the plans for a bow house. Hers will be a green house but it could be used for a variety of puroposes. I understand these get very warm inside in the winter when the sun is out. It will cost more than the PVC hoop but is also a permanent building. That could be either a positive or a negative.

: Andreas: I don't know what you expect outdoors temperatures to be during your
: build--it may be too cold where you live--but I also faced the problem of
: where to build. The space you describe sounds a bit small to me. You'd be
: much more comfortable with space to move around. Think also about what
: will you do with the deck and hull when you have both pieces separated in
: your build space. My thinking is that 10' x 20' (approx. 3 x 6 meters)is
: about minimal space to build a 5 meter boat in.

: My solution was to erect a "temporary" tent and I based it on the
: hoophouse in the link below. My climate is pretty temperate. The hoophouse
: cost me less than $100 US, and it housed my first build with phenomenal
: success (I was expecting collapses, terrible leaks, bug infestations etc,
: none of which happened) and it is still standing and now housing build #2.
: It is ugly, but I did not try to make it nice.

: The greenhouse effect works well, and just two nights ago, it was 40*F
: outside, but 80*F inside with a small electric heater going while epoxy
: cured on my scarf joints. Inefficient heating, but all is fair in love,
: war and kayak building! If I did not have so much shade in my yard, I am
: sure I would get a much greater heating effect from the sun.

: I bet you could do a heavier cover, take time to seal it up and with portable
: heat (propane, electric, maybe a small brazier or something) do just fine
: even if it is freezing outside. Just so long as any combustion is safe and
: doesn't let off toxic exhaust or contaminants that would interfere with
: bonds or finishes. Anyway, if this looks interesting to you, I'll be glad
: to discuss in more detail.

It's not the size...it's the way you use it.
