My experience (and this covers many years...around 45 years..., a lot of finish work, and quite a few boats with Elmer's and titebond glue) is that if you wipe the excess glue off with a dry rag, or try to scrape it off, you will probably, but not always, get a blotch. I wipe excess glue off with a wet rag and do not get blotches...UNLESS I didn't get it all. I make sure I get it all. If you are doing a stripper, you don't need to wipe the excess off as you strip. The scraping, planing, and sanding will take care of that. This advice is worth exactly what you want it to be worth.
