In Response To: Epoxy: Re-glassing the deck... your input please... (Malcolm Schweizer)

: Good day all,

: Well, the time that I have put off for so long has finally come. When I
: 'glassed the deck of my kayak I has some problems with milkiness. I now
: believe the resin had been contaminated with condensation. Nonetheless, it
: wasn't what I expected, and I had sworn that when the time came to
: revarnish I would sand the whole thing off and redo the deck down to the
: waterline.

: That time has come all too soon. There was someone that posted a very good
: detail long ago of sanding off the 'glass on their deck. Thanks to whoever
: that was. I will use the advice of a random orbit sander. However, I would
: like some input from anyone that's done this before. Any time savers? Any
: advice?

: This time 'round I plan to use Raka epoxy. All the writings I've read imply
: that it's a thinner resin, and I think that will do much better in my
: tropical climate. It sure can't do worse than what I used, which I won't
: say because it may have been due to condensation, and I can't blame that
: on the manufacturer. Others that have used the stuff had great results.

: By the way, Goldspar varnish has passed the ultimate UV test... riding around
: on my truck in the tropics for over a year and a half. Mainly just
: revarnishing because of wear and tear, but no indications of UV damage.

I recently visited a local producer of strip kayak kits. While speaking with him about a demo boat, he stated he had reglassed the deck. I was surprised to hear this as the boat looked very nice. He said he used a heat gun to soften and remove the expoxy and glass. I haven't done this myself but he is an experienced builder and the results were good.
Good luck
