You could consider using air-shocks that have a valve to increase or decrease shock absorbtion. My motorcycle has adjustable shocks that allow me to ride soft or hard depending on the kind of riding I am planning on doing. I know these shocks are available at automotive supply stores just not sure about hte $$$. You need not have to haul heavy weights each time you want to use the trailer.
