: The Cape Charles has higher initial stability, making it easier to get into and out of.
: It is a flatter boat making it more difficult to roll.
: It is a slower boat but not by much.

: If you build a 34 pound boat (the plan weight) and not a 44 pound boat (following the instructions) both boats paddle well.
: See the link below for a "Review" of the boats and an idea of how to get to 34 pounds.

: : I am a first time kayak builder and would like to make a decision
: : on which kayak to build, either the cape charles 18 or the chesapeake 18.
: : Some pros and cons for each would help me out.

The Chesapeake is a much improved version of my old Cape Charles design. It is stronger, better balanced, easier to build, and more seaworthy. This is the boat I'd build.

You or, anyone else, is welcome to call me for more details on this or any of my designs at 410-267-0137 (I don't have time to check this board often, so calling is better)

As for George's recommendations on construction. They are dangerous and I strongly advice you not to follow them. George has visited our shop and spoken with me at length. It is my understanding that he has never paddled in the ocean or in ocean - conditions, only on windy lakes.

Please don't follow his advice in building my designs - your boat may well break if you do. As for weights, anyone is welcome to weigh the boats in our shop (the weights are in the catalog too) - they are some of the lightest sea kayaks made, you hardly need to build them even lighter unless you plan to race.
