: Question, when you cut out the section for the veneer do you stay within the first
: layer of the plywood and is there a variety of sizes(thickness)

You must be asking about the veneer I used on the two Arctic Terns. I am aware of two general types of veneer, paper backed (usually thinner) and non-paper backed. I used the latter which was almost as thick as the top layer of plywood.

The general process was cut out the veneer pieces and then route out a recess in the first layer of plywood for the veneer pieces before the panels are wired together. I used a Dremel Moto Tool with a plastic routing base to cut the recess. The routing base is a bit flimsy, but with plenty of fiddling I was able to get the exact depth of cut needed. First I etched the pattern outline with a sharp knife before using the router. Some trimming with a sharp chisel may be useful. I then glued the veneer/plywood sandwich with epoxy by clamping between stiff smooth boards or plywood scraps. Plastic wrap was placed between panels and boards. A little bit of cleanup with a chisel and sandpaper after the glue cured and the panels were ready to wire together.
