Hi Roger

No rachet, it cuts amazingly easy using a very thin blade (removeable, replaceable, and probably resharpenable). This particular brand comes with an extra blade.

The anvil is a very firm urethane looking material that allows the blade to cut every last wood fiber for an extremely clean cut.

Before this I was using a utility knife with a straightedge, or a saw, or whatever. Now I use this almost exclusively, and might touch up a longer diagonal cut with a plane or knife or sandpaper for that final precision fit 8-)
