Yo Randy

I have a 1985 Honda city (looks alot like a shopping trolley and about the same size) with roof racks for my windsurfer. I had no problem carting my nearly completed Guillemot S&G from its secret building site (long story) home the other day. NO problems. I was just carefull to tie the ends to the front towing eyes/tow bar(that I have fitted for mounting my mountain bike rack to).

Because the gap between the racks is small, there is ample scope for teeter tottering, hence lashing the ends down which made the kayak very secure.

So roof racking can be done.

The only technical problem is the legal overhang limits you have to comply with. I think in NZ it is either 1m or 1.5m over each end. That x2 = either 2m or 3m that you are allowed to have overhanging. The Guillemot S&G is 5.2 and I am pretty sure the Honda City is easily 3.2m long (+ the allowed 2m+ overhang = 5.2), so it is a go as far as I am concerned.

There are a few designs like the pygmy goldeneye standard/osprey which are @15' which might help if the roof rack overhang issues are getting tight.

Definately much more comfortable to have the kayak on the roof or on a trailer than stashed in the cabin.

Good Luck

Pete
