: I waited to do the masik and footbrace last, like you, but still managed to
: make them too high. The "sit on a 2x4 on the aft deck and
: measure" method didn't work well for me. Any suggestions for the next
: boat?

What I am doing on my current kayak (18.25" wide X 17'8", built to H.C. Petersen's/Cunninghams's instructions), is to install all of the (mortised) deckbeams into the gunwales, except for the two curved deck beams and masik which I haven't fabricated yet. You can then place some temporary ribs in place (cardboard strips work) and suspend the kayak off the foor so that the "ribs" just touch. You can then sit inside the frame and test the depth (rib length), backrest/footrest fit and determine the minimum amount of curvature of the curved deck beams and masik, for fit and comfort. Rather than guessing you can tailor the kayak to you as the process continues. The disadvantage for mortise and tenon construction is that you have to disassemble the deck again, once the curved deck beams are fininshed, and reassemble it, but that is not a big time penalty.

I'll let you know how the fit turns out...
