Skeg housing

: Ripping a 1/4" slot in a 1x4x3' board for the aluminum skeg housing,
: with a rising stack at the stern end for a wire to run out of to lift and
: lower the skeg.

Hadn't thought of cutting a notch in a solid board for the housing. I always thought about fabricating the box from plywood. Less bulk in your aft compartment for the same strength. Might not be a significant weight difference.

I've seen some fairly long skinny skegs (18" x 4") similar to what you're envisioning. Haven't paddled with one, so can't comment on effectiveness. Looks like it'd work pretty well.

Have fun, whichever course you take.
