I kept a lot of print outs from this board many months before I varnished trying to find the best way for me. I use Minwax's Helmsman Clear Gloss Spar Urethane priced at about $7.50 a quart. I actually found it for $4.50 with a coupond. I used one quart and part of another. I put on 7 coats, 6 with Bounty paper towels and wiped on. Fast and clean. The last coat was put on with a foam brush. This varnish dries very fast. I lightly wet sanded sanded between each coat with 220 grit. I was able to put on one complete coat each day, varnishing the haul in the morning and then the deck in the afternoon and then sanded early the next morning and started the process over again. On the fifth and sixth coat, I put both on in one day and did not sand between coats, just so I could get more depth of varnish on quickly. I sanded the sixth coat and then carefully foam brushed on the final coat.
