In Response To: portage yokes or devices? (Scott E. davis)

: I went on a kayak river trip on the Wisconsin/UP border this weekend. I
: managed to carry our tent cookin's and my own kayak for a 1/4 mile
: portage. However, it was not pretty and I was not satisfied carrying the
: boat on my head, or with it hanging down from my hand. Has anyone
: developed a good yoke that does not get in the way or front and back
: portage packs? - Scott E.

Ken Sutherland sent me plans for a kayak yoke and I posted them about 6 months ago on the board. My scanner is not working at the moment or I would repost it but here is a description. A piece of wood 1/2" to 3/4" thick by 2" wide has a bow bent in the middle like any canoe yoke. This piece ends up being 24" long. An elongated slot hole at each end of the 24" long yoke is for a wing bolt, nut and 2" long piece of wood that slipe up under the coaming and is tightened into place to hold the yoke. Two pieces of wood 6" long and curved with rubber pads are bolted to the yoke for your shoulders to rest on. Hope this isn't too muddy.
