Mine is probably similar. It's probably 3/4 at the widest point and tapers to 0 at the forward and aft end. It extends a way's forward (probably 36" to get to the fwd most point).

The fin I made has less to do with being a skeg and is more like just changing the shape of the back of the kayak to be more V shaped instead of rounded. It just gives it a little more "bite" in the back so it doesn't slide around back there. It sure made a difference.
