I laminated cedar and pine strips to make an outer stem. Some people use hardwood, but I figured if the rest of the boat was cedar and pine, the stem could be too.

Some people swear by internal external stems as they feel it adds significant strength. I have no idea who is right, but like the clean look of a stem, and it makes sense to me that it is a stronger method of finishing the ends.
