: Really? Around here spruce goes for +/- $8 per board foot! Choke, gasp!
: That's $46+ (including tax) for a 2"x4"x8'!!! It's nice,
: mast-grade stuff, but ouch!

I don't even pay that much for Alaskan Yellow Cedar (when I can find it!). Last time, I paid $2.50/bf for the only completely clear AYC board in the bin. It was so beautiful, I couldn't make it into a single paddle...it will be 5 or 6 bird's mouth shafts.

Around here, it's the #2 grade stuff, which is usually all thrown together in a "White Wood" bin. If you dig a little, there's some really nice stuff, although never completely clear.

I'd presume that there isn't anything around here that's old-growth and would be knot-free enough to sell as mast-grade or aircraft-grade, so it's all mostly 3rd (and some 2nd) growth stuff.

I had a guy cut a spruce log for me, and I'm getting it sawn into planks. I'll be in spruce for a long time!!
