What I didn't like about the pine was the way the wood reflects light. If you put two strips from the same board next to each other, but flip them end-for-end, they look completely different. Spruce doesn't seem to have this problem. Spruce is also generally lighter, and usually as cheap (in the same bin) as pine.

: I also found it easy to find very cheap, relatively knot free boards to rip.

And what knots there are are usually quite small and tight.
