This is only the case if the lower jaw of the bifurcation is below the waterline. A good example is the one hatch boat from Unalaska drawn by James Shields in about 1798. More typically the lower jaw rises quite high above the waterline and it is doubtful that these designs will work in the same way as the bow bulb of a ship. Any advantage this shape may have requires a different explanation.

It does provide a somewhat finer entry at the waterline, particularly in waves, while permitting more volume higher on the bow for lift over the waves.
