I think I got it now: the kayak wants to spin about its long axis, and this puts lots of torque on that center assembly. Just like you said.

Still, it's not too much trouble to account for that, as you point out. The way I've done it here, on a split-axle unit, does require a connector between the two axles.

Your solid-axle design is stronger, I think, being designed for this use. Most golf bags (well, mine) weigh 25-30 pounds, so I'm already pushing the cart's capacity. I certainly wouldn't consider this to be expedition-duty. On the other hand, I know a woman with a Pygmy Coho. Her house is about 100 yards from the Sound, via a graded walkway, and this might (cheaply) save her the trouble of lugging it when she wants to go for a day paddle.
