I haven't used it, but suspect it is light weight. This might be fine for quiet waters, but could give problems in rocky areas, etc. You might want to consider a synthetic nylon or polyester from George Dyson (360-734-9226; No WEB site). Last time I looked he sold all sorts of weights of each for $2.00 yard.

: Do I have to prime the canvas before painting it?

If you go with canvas and paint, most people seem to be using an elastomeric roof paint (usually white "Snow Roof") as a primer/sealer. It can be thinned. Regular latex house paint can go over that.
