Yes you're right, 9 oz. is overkill. Cloth manufacturers don't make tape for us, it's for the boatbuilding industry (fiberglass etc.) Experienced builders are using 6 oz. cloth that they cut their own. I believe a few places on the W. Coast carry 6 oz. cloth tapes.
I personally use 6 oz. on the inside and 4 on the outside for clarity and no big level of glass to fair of weave to fill.
