You can also put a twist in the strap to accomplish the same thing.

I was carring a SOT once, and noticed a loud humm whenever I got above 40 MPH. The strap was vibrating and the boat hull resonated beautifully (I think it was about D below middle C) :)

When I put a twist in the strap running across the open deck area of the SOT, the sound stopped.
