: I have a Woodshop that is about 11x18. Really it's just a wide single car
: garage. I'm considering making a 17-18 foot Kayak. Am I just asking for
: trouble working in such a small work area? I'd move to the basement for
: the duration of my construction, but the finished basement is my kids play
: room.

You have a decent space that you can devote to the project, that's better than a lot of us. We have to make our kids play outside. Seriously, it's fine, guess most boats built in a garage anyway. If you can keep the dust you make out of the house you will be asking for less trouble anyway. Presume you will chase the kids out later because you'll need your shop to store your boats (plural)

: Also, could someone provide me with a gerneral list of tools I might need to
: make a basic yak? $$'s are tight and I may not be able to order the wood
: if I also have to put another $150 - $200 in tools. How many clamps am I
: going to need?

Tools required are few and mostly hand tools. Clamps-can never have enough but you can make some out of pvc pipe that will do a lot of jobs. Price of wood can be a trade off vs. what tools you have. It's expensive to buy milled strips but if you already have a table saw or access to one you may be able to re-saw used wood, like siding for instance, which might be had for cost of your time. Cove and bead milled strips are not necessary, you can plane bevels on the edges of strip with straight edges but again, costs some time. Tools I use often: a table saw, a ROS sander, a cheap backsaw, a cheap block plane, a nice 3/4 chisel, a utility knife, an Arrow stapler. You might want to get a few cheap shop lights or rig some hanging 200 w bulbs, can't have too much light, either.

Get some books. Buy Nick's book. From yr message figure you want a stripper but if you haven't decided maybe get a book on Stitch and Glue construction. There are several books around on building strip canoes which might be helpful. You can probably borrow some from yr library. SOF are pretty cheap to build so there's a lot of choices.
