In Response To: another idea turned around :) (Paul G. Jacobson)

: Actually, it was the other way 'round.: A couple of pieces of plywood
: sandwiched around a single thick piece of foam. When the bolts holding the
: plywood together are tightened the foam is forced out at the sides a
: bit--putting some pressure on the hull to hold the thing in place. Cutting
: the pieces to a close fit helps the thing work like a plug.

Thanks Paul-- I remembered the sandwich part... but obviously got it backwards :) ... I was thinking about the plywood as "filling" rather than "bread" ... I've been toying with doing something like that on my Coho for day trips when I'm not loaded to the hilt with gear...This winter I'll cut a bow hatch & install a bulkhead, but am planning to leave the stern hatch/bulkheadless so I can load my long/bulky gear in there. (Meanwhile, I'm using floatbags). I'm thinking of cutting a bulkhead from 3 inch mincell foam and giving it a plywood backplate so I can attach a handle to it for easy placement/removal.... an 'open-face sandwich' if you will.
