Here is one defintion of the origin of the word baidarka.

The word baidara as defined by George Dyson on page 4 of his book "Baidarka" - 'The word baidara, a term originating on the rivers of the Ukraine, was used to describe the Native's larger,open,skin-covered craft, while the diminutive of this , baidarka, referred to the distinctly hatched, smaller species of decked skin boat.'
