Brian, jsut from looking at the picture I'd estimate the ferrules have a wall thickness of about 1/8th of an inch. Depending on the weight of your cloth, you could probably achieve this with 3 to 6 layers of glass.

I can't imagine why a mold would be needed. for conveniece, though, I'd personally look for a piece of styrene foam that was a bit smaller than the diameter of the wood I planned to use for a handle. Applying the cloth to this mummy style ( get a 3 foot length, about a foot wide, and wrpa it around the foam rod, cover with some resin and wrap another turn around the foam rod. continue this for 4 or more layers, building up the glass, but not pulling it so tight that it forced out the resin. Then just support the foam rod somewhere until the resin hardened.

A sharp stick would be all you needed to poke out the foam when the ferrule had cured. The fancier way is to use a few drops of acetone to dissolve out the foam. Or, you could wrap a dowel rod with a piece of wax paper and build your ferrule on that. Leave some paper hanging out at the ends and you'll have something to grip when it comes time to pull the thing off the dowel. If the size is convenient, a cardboard tube from a roll of papertowels, or a roll of giftwrap could work, too. Wrap it with waxpaper or a layer of saran wrap, and when the resin is cured you can just rip the tube apart to get it out.
Trimming the ends would be a matter for a utility knife while the resin was "Green" and stil a bit soft.

The cost to experiment is low (about 1/3rd yard of fabric and 3 or 4 ounces of resin) and the time involved in not great. ( how long does it take to wrap a piece of cloth around a foam or paper mold?)Why not take a shot at making some of these and let us know how you did?
