By the time you've built a jig or set up to use a power saw you can do the whole thing with a sharp block plane. Look at Chris Kulczycki's book - the Kayak Shop - and follow his instructions. It really is that easy. Also, the problem with power tools is that they cut too fast and it's easy to overdo it. Good luck and enjoy the zen of planing.
