: I am trying to build a canvas covered kayak but I am looking for a good place
: to get canvas. I have found referances of other builders for $6 a yard but
: all i find locally is $25 a yard. Can anyone recommend what kind I should
: get and good places to get it. Or can you reccomend another inexpensive
: alternative? Any help is appreciated... Rick

I found canvas at Pearl Paints ( http://www.pearlpaint.com/index.html ). Search for "duck". You want #10 cotton duck. Others here have also used #12 cotton duck which is a bit thinner than #10. Seattle Fabrics ( http://www.seattlefabrics.com/ ) also has cotton duck, but is more expensive.

Alternatives (lighter and probably stronger) are nylon or polyester (Dacron). George Dyson ( 360-734-9226 ; no web site) sells both at $2.00/yd at various weights. Call him to get samples. He recommends his nylon if you are sewing. If you are stapling, it shouldn't matter. Mike Hanks found a 9 oz (typical weight to use) polyester at his local tent and awning shop that would be suitable for sewing.
