When I installed these hatches on my Arctic Tern I notched the deck but not the hatch itself. This works fine in warm weather and the hatches are plenty water tight. In cold weather, however, with neoprene gloves and ice the hatches are basically impossible to open. What works for me is a shortened, fiberglassed tongue depresser kept on a tether in my PFD pocket. Prys the hatch open with no problem.
