Trash pumps

Diaphragm pumps like these are used as trash pumps, because it's really hard to choke them. There are no small orifices, pistons, seals etc. to jam, and anything the size of sand or gravel just cruises right on through.

: The trick is to have your intake holes ("strainer basket") smaller
: than anything else downline--if sand gets in, it can be pumped through.
: Gravel that would get caught in the pump never gets past the strainer
: basket.
